6 Mistakes New Reps Make in Avon

I LOVE being a leader with Avon! I LOVE sharing what has worked for me in my business and helping other representatives be successful too. This last year, I’ve been able to successfully help 94 new team members start their business and I was noticing common mistakes that seemed to happen. Here are my top 6 Mistakes New Reps Avon Make.

  1. You’ve got to be COMMITTED! Avon is not a get rich, quick business. You need to commit to 3-6 months of doing the daily practices to really see the results. It’s easy to earn a couple hundred dollars a month with Avon, but you first will need to build your customer base. If you don’t earn what you want in your first few campaigns, KEEP TRYING! Don’t give up! I see New Avon Reps give up WAY too easily. Keep working on your goals and building your customer base. You’ll get there.. as long as you stay committed!
  2. Learn to roll with the punches! Whether you get frustrated because the online ordering system is having difficulties or you’re discouraged because a customer decided they didn’t want something after they ordered, learn to get right back up! No matter what company you decide to partner with, or however you decide to build your business, you will encounter challenges.
  3. Order more than 10 brochures! To get new customers, you’ll need brochures. To get more sales, you’ll need brochures. When you hand out 10 brochures, you can expect to get a few orders… but if you’re in this business to make money, you’ll need more than 10 brochures!
  4. Be consistent! To build your customer base and sales, your potential customers need to see that you are serious about your business and providing them great customer service. You do that by building their trust that you’re going to continue providing them Avon service. Every campaign, deliver brochures and follow up with your customers. EVERY CAMPAIGN!
  5. Keep your vision out in front of you! It’s easy to forget why you’re doing what you’re doing. This business can be challenging when you aren’t clear on why you’re working hard. I like to print out a goal that I’d like to achieve and look at it every day! For example, one awesome team member wants to buy a new pair of shoes. She saved a photo of the shoes and has it as a screen saver on her phone. Every time she opens her phone, she sees the pair of shoes she wants. This helps reinforce why she’s handing out her brochures, why she’s following up with her customers and why she continues to work her business.
  6. Don’t stock up on inventory and deals! It’s so easy to want to grab all the new products, samples and stock up on what you think will sell. You can quickly (and easily) get in over your head and owe Avon money. If you want to purchase your own products, write yourself out a receipt and keep track of how much you’re spending. Your earnings can easily disappear when you’re buying your own products and then you’ll think you aren’t making any money!

FAQ about selling Avon – How does it all work?

FAQ about Selling Avon

Q: How does it all work?

A: To start your own business, you will simply show the Avon brochure to your friends and family and show them the new products with samples and/or demos (if you choose to purchase).

The pay structure is strictly commission and is based on how much you sell in a two week campaign. You are responsible for finding your own customers. Your “customers” (friends and family), give you their orders. It’s best to ask for 50% of their payment at this time and the rest when you deliver the product.

Commission ranges between 20% – 50% based on how much you sell.

Here’s how it works: we go around with the brochures for two weeks and collect orders with full payments from customers, then we tell Avon what we need to fill the orders. At the time you submit your order, you will be asked to submit a payment to Avon which equals the wholesale “cost” of the products.

Avon ships us the products and we take them and deliver to our customers. The customer will have already paid you the brochure price (retail). The total amount you earn is the difference between the brochure price and the wholesale cost of the products. To use the above example of the $300.00 order, you’d pay Avon $195.00 at the time you place the order and keep the $105.00 profit immediately.

Then, you enter the orders in online by your due date. The order will arrive at your house in 2-3 business days. For example, my order is due every other Thursday by 11:59 pm and then it arrives at my house usually Sunday morning. Avon has their own delivery company that they use when you place your order on time. Although if you do not live in the city, your order will be delivered by UPS.

When products arrive from Avon, simply deliver them to your customers with the next brochure. There is a statement/invoice with your order that tells you exactly how much you earned on each item and what your expenses are.

Lastly, you deliver the product to your customer and collect the remainder of their payment! Show them the next brochure and ask for referrals to new customers.

It is as Easy as that! When you’ve collected all of your customers payments, you keep your earnings and pay Avon before you place your next order.

Events to grow your Avon business!

Avon Events


Events are an awesome way to grow your Avon business and has been the most successful way for me to find customers and new team members. Events can be small or large.. your choice! This is your business!

Where to have an Avon event?

I always look at the different festivals, fairs and local community get togethers. Sometimes there are costs associated with events or the group will ask you to donate an item to their cause. I’ve never paid over $50 for an event and that was for a 3 day event!

You can also ask your local grocery store or mom and pop shop if you can set up to share your Avon brochures. I also like to hand out Avon’s breast cancer resource guide and our flyers for domestic violence. I’ve had a few different table events that required a small table (even a TV tray will do) and just brochures to hand out.

The smaller table events can be just for a few hours (3 or so). Larger events usually require more time and some help! I’m thankful to have my husband help me set up and tear down!

Ever though of setting up at a retirement or senior living home? This is a wonderful way to build a consistent customer base and go back every month to sell!

What do I need for an Avon event?

For a small table event, you might need a table, tablecloth (dollar tree!) and brochures.

For a large event, you might need a EZ Up, pop up tent (to keep you out of the sun), a couple tables and a couple chairs. My upline Barbara usually rents a Spin Wheel. It gets people’s attention and kids LOVE IT! While the kid is spinning, talk to the mom! Give out balloons or something from the dollar tree to the kids. I like to hand out fragrance samples to the kids.

I always have brochures, a name badge (or something on me that says Avon) and a product to give away.

I like to bring along samples and the little lipsticks for people to take with them after visiting my table.

I usually don’t sell products from my table, I just like to get my brochures in the hands of people that want them and get their contact information. If setting up with the purpose of selling product, make sure to have the essentials like Skin So Soft, deodorant and a few fragrances! Jewelry is also great to have on hand!

Avon Events

What do I do at an event?

First, you don’t just sit behind the table! You talk to people!

As people walk by, I ask “Would you like an Avon brochure?”.

Have a conversation! How are they doing? When is the last time they’ve seen an Avon brochure? Would they like to enter to WIN the product I’m giving away? Sometimes I’ll have a basket of products to give away… but I’ve given away just a bottle of Bug Guard too!

I hand them a Customer Contact Card for them to fill out and enter into the fishbowl (got mine at a garage sale!). At the end of the day, I pull a name and call the winner!

When they’re filling out the customer contact card, I ask them “Do you have a current Avon Representative? Would you like Avon service?”

I also ALWAYS ask “Avon is looking for someone that would like to earn some extra money. Would that be of interest to you?” If they say yes, GREAT! I set a time and day to get them started. I often hear “No, not at the time.” Which is fine! I then dig a little deeper… “That’s okay! New representatives earn $200-$500 on average a month, DO YOU KNOW someone that could benefit from that?” If they say yes, I get their info and tell them I will give them a free gift if their friend opens an Avon account. Something little like an eye makeup remover lotion or hand cream. Even a free lipstick!

Then, I follow up with a phone call a few days after the event. I call everyone that didn’t win and say “Hi, Susan.. this is Jessica with Avon. I met you this weekend at the local grocery store. I wanted to let you know that eventhough a winner has been chosen, I would still like to offer you a $5 gift certificate with a $20 order. Have you had a chance to look through the brochure? Is there any samples you would like or any products you would like to try?”

You will hear “Yes!”, “No, I haven’t had a chance to look through the book yet” and “No, nothing at this time”.

Yes – take their order and say THANK YOU!

No – “Okay! No problem!  I will be drop off the next brochure to you and a few samples and check in with you next time”


Think about this: if you had a table event 2-4 times a week with 20-30 new potential customers… that would SKYROCKET your business!

That’s it! That’s how to have a successful event! Don’t make it more complicated than it has to be. Events are fun and profitable!

I find that when I am preparing for an Event that I make a check list and make sure I have everything packed to take with me so that Event can be successful.

But events are the easy part… its creating habits for your everyday life that are sometimes hard to develop.
What habits am I talking about?? Glad you asked… 😉

**Things like making sure I have Avon brochures w/recruiting fliers in my purse everyday… business cards to leave everywhere I go.
**Making sure I have something on that shouts Avon… a pin… a shirt… a hat… a coat… or Avon jewelry or other products on my person.
**A couple of sample packets ( goodie bag with a makeup, skincare, cologne and perfume sample, an opportunity flyer to offer to the next Avon Lover I run into)
**A smile and a willing spirit to share all that Avon has brought into my life!

The most important thing for me is really…well… the money in Avon can be wonderful but don’t forget to share the other things that this wonderful company has brought into your life…sometimes people are looking for more…let them know what else this Avon Family can bring into their lives!
